How to best format videos for Instagram

Posting videos on Instagram can be quite tricky.

Why? Because there are so many options across instagram formats opposed to photos. With that being so, your video can upload not as you intended.

This blog is to help you better decide on what format/ dimensions to edit your video in to help you achieve the best look.

For the settings mentioned the pixel numbers will be put in your editing system when creating your timeline prior to editing video. However you can usually change settings even after you have began editing.

Things to consider…

Which would you enjoy watching content on? Also which works best with the type of video your are editing?

Real examples:

Below from left to right are real examples of each video format for :60 videos on Instagram.

Obviously these are not the exact sizes that are shown from the app when viewing on a desktop but this gives your perspective of the different ratios. If you are viewing on a cellphone the sizes should be accurate.

Things to consider…

The one of the left has to be turned 90 degrees to be shown in the full 16:9 format listed above.

Again, you have to ask your self which is better fitting for your content. One shows more video vertically and the other, horizontally.

IG Stories and IG Reel

Those two pretty much follow IGTV with the 9:16 ratio with a slimmer video view. Instagram has not officially listed on their site with the dimensions of Reel is but it looks to be similar to IGTV and IG Stories.

IG Stories is very flexible and usually filmed on your phone. You can easily zoom in and out or rotate a video to make it fit the screen as you like.

IG reel is also made to be easily filmed and edited inside the app. You can also upload and that is when you need to keep dimensions in mind for it to look good. However, I would worry less and use the app to film, it is actually pretty handy and provides a lot of options for creativity.
